Today the way we grow our organic produce is changing; the farming method of the future is local and all year round. GN has been developing LED-horticulture applications for a new generation of farming that no longer relies solely on natural lighting conditions in order to thrive. We design and test our lights rigorously to optimize growth conditions to deliver the highest quality plants; we care about everything from form to taste and smell. In fact, GN has spent many years researching and developing optical technology to preserve the volatile plant compounds that account for smell. These compounds are often destroyed when plants are grown in controlled biosystems due to the hot spots created by the high pressure sodium (HPS) lights used in these systems. When comparing flowers grown commercially in controlled biosystems (using HPS lights) in the Netherlands to those grown in British fields, the Dutch flowers are aesthetically superior to the British flowers but lack the natural scent that makes the field grown flowers so appealing. With GN lighting solutions, quality plant structure and colour doesn't come at the cost of the plant's fragrance thanks to homogeneous distributions of light intensity and highly efficient LED systems.
HPS lighting has been the staple of the horticulture industry for decades and is still widely used today. However, the efficiency of LED technology is advancing year on year and systems like the Telos have already superseded their HPS rivals, delivering the same quantity of usable light with far lower power consumption. Our Telos Systems use the latest in CREE LED technology and bespoke optical elements to target chlorophyll intake peaks, providing a full spectrum light that increases the rate of plant photosynthesis without expending extra energy.
Whilst initial investment in LED systems remains higher than HPS lights, we have tailored our business model to bring you the best in grow light technology at a significantly reduced price. Our research led design and manufacture model has enabled us to identify new materials and methods of fabrication which lower production cost whilst optimizing light output for plant growth. This reduced initial outlay together with our energy saving design allows for a quicker return on investment than most other LED systems on the market; making the Telos truly the first commercially viable LED system for horticultural applications.
